Why Markdown rather than plain text
Plain text extraction throws away the structure, which is the part you actually wanted: you get a wall of lines with no idea what was a heading and no table left standing. Markdown keeps the structure while staying a plain text file — so it pastes cleanly into a wiki, a static site, Obsidian or Notion, diffs properly in Git, and gives a language model the document's shape instead of an undifferentiated blob.
How the structure is inferred
A PDF does not record that something is a heading — it records glyphs at coordinates in a font at a size. This converter reads those positions and sizes, works out the document's body text size statistically, and treats runs that are meaningfully larger as headings, ranked by size. Text items on a shared baseline are grouped into lines, lines with consistent column gaps are treated as table rows, and a line starting with a bullet glyph or 1. becomes a list item. It is heuristic, so a heavily designed brochure will come out messier than a report — check the preview before you save.

Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?
No — the file is opened and rewritten entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded to a server, so your document never leaves your device.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
No — a scan has no text layer to convert. Run it through OCR PDF first, then come back here.
How good is table detection?
Good on tables with clear column alignment, which covers most reports and statements. Merged cells, nested tables and columns separated only by a rule rather than whitespace will need hand-fixing.
Can I convert several PDFs at once?
Yes — add multiple files; each becomes its own .md file and a batch downloads as a ZIP.
What happens to images in the PDF?
They are noted as a placeholder in the Markdown. Use PDF to Images if you need the pictures themselves.
